Announcements That Really Stick

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Instead of your typical save-the-date or baby announcement card, try doing a magnet! For your engagement, it’s especially nice for when family and friends may not have met your fiancee. For the new addition to your family, your loved ones will love to show off the magnet instead of the typical emailed announcement. There are tons of online vendors who can help you create this easy and affordable option to traditional cards, we like Magnet Street and Magnet Queen.

To Lounge Or Not To Lounge?

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

One of the latest trends we’ve been seeing is a lounge area at the reception. Loungers beware: there is one distinct effect that having a lounge will create on your reception: Far fewer people will dance.

Some couples are okay with this. Perhaps your families prefer to chat rather than tear up the dance floor. In that case, you could consider a lounge feel for the entire reception.

If you do want dancing, consider this option: Start the reception with the dancing portion and once the band is done and your grandparents have headed home, open an “after hours” lounge area. It will keep the party going all night and you can have a full dance floor and your chic lounge area.

Jamming Wedding Shower

Monday, July 14th, 2008

For the Martha Stewart brides out there…try making your wedding shower a jam-making party! Rent a large kitchen (or use a friend’s) and have people be in charge of different stations: cutting the fruit, cooking on the stove, filling and decorating jars. These homemade goodies can be used as the favors during your big day and your friends and family will have a great time getting to know each other throughout the process! Prefer pickling or salsa-making? The can’s the limit!

A Creative Alternative to Monograms

Friday, July 11th, 2008

We get it…you’re excited about your new last name and you love the idea of plastering you and your beloved’s initials all over everything you own. But stop for a second and try this on for size.

Instead of paying someone to fancy up your initials, why not have a professional designer create a logo that really describes you as a couple?

A professional logo designer can create something unique for you and you can incorporate it throughout your wedding. From invitations and programs to dinner menus and dance floor light projections, your logo tells much more about you than your initials. As a last meaningful touch you can have the design printed and beautifully framed so you can remember the big day. You could even take it an extra step and use it on your family website or future baby announcements. A logo is a clever and unique choice for couples who want to change it up a bit!

Tiered Invitations: Proceed with Caution

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

As a general rule, we don’t support tiered invitations but if you MUST do this please heed the following suggestions…

-Do NOT, under any circumstances, put an A/B/C or 1/2/3 on the back of your RSVP cards. Trust me, your guests will spot it no matter how small you write it and will result in hurt feelings. If you must designate them, choose a non-descript symbol, such as a triangle for A, a square for B, and a circle for C…you get the idea.

-Do not publicize that you’re doing tiered invites.  That means only you, your future spouse and your wedding coordinator.

-If someone asks about where their invitation is and mentions that someone else already received theirs, it’s ok to tell a little white lie and say you ran out of stamps or the calligrapher got behind, etc. No harm, no foul.

One idea to help save is to have the lower layers of your cake be cardboard or styrofoam covered in fondant. The cake will look like the towering masterpiece you want, but without the giant pricetag. Your guests will have their pieces sliced from a sheet cake – far less expensive!

If that doesn’t appeal to you, take a suggestion from Jenna Bush and create the illusion of a taller cake by propping it up on a tall cake stand and filling it in with flowers.
