Ask the Expert: Groom’s Attire
Monday, June 28th, 2010Today’s post is courtesy of the men’s style guru of NYC, Julie Rath of Rath & Co. She knows all the best places to find the perfect attire for your groom, no matter what his style.
Every groom should look dashing at his wedding. If the dress code permits, ditch the tux in favor of a well-chosen, perfectly-fitting suit that you can wear for job interviews or other important events. It’s a wise use of your wedding budget, and all guys look fantastic in a well-fitted suit. Here are some top tips on suiting up your wedding:
- Color: A navy or grey suit with a white shirt and black shoes are excellent options. If you’re not asking your groomsmen to buy the same exact suit as yours (a great way to build goodwill), you should give them guidance on color. In this situation, opt for navy because if you just tell them, “buy grey suits,” you’ll end up with all different shades and patterns. Black can work too, but it’s a strong color that not everyone looks good in, so go with the easier-to-wear navy.
- Time of Day: If your wedding is a more casual, daytime affair, you can wear a navy blazer, shirt, and tie with khaki, grey or seersucker pants. To look really pulled together with this option, match the metals of your belt buckle and watch to the buttons on your blazer. Wear gold buttons with a gold buckle and a gold watch. With silver-tone buttons, opt for silver accessories.
- Ties: Neckwear provides a nice way to coordinate with the color the bridesmaids are wearing and with the color scheme of the overall event. Look for ties that pick up on colors that will appear elsewhere in the wedding. If you’re wearing a suit and you’d rather stick to a more classic and simple style for yourself, try a long white or silver tie, and let your groomsmen do the color thing.

Ask the Expert: Childcare for your Wedding
Wednesday, June 10th, 2009Brooke Woodard of Metropolitan Sitters is a master with kids. We recently sat down with her to chat about how to keep your littlest guests happy!
What’s the best way to coax a ring bearer/flower girl down the aisle?
-Explain to the child how important the day is
-Practice so they are excited and less nervous when the time comes
-Have two flowers girls or ring bearers so the shy one can follow the other’s lead
Some couples like to offer childcare at their reception, how do they go about organizing this?
-Rent out a smaller room where the reception is taking place
-Estimate ~1 sitter for every 3 kids, this ratio will vary depending on the age of the kids
Lastly and most importantly, have a sense of humor if something unplanned occurs! Those moments are the ones that give a wedding character and charm!
Metropolitan Sitters is a boutique babysitting service for families in New York City. They offer experienced, friendly and college-educated nannies and babysitters for their children. Contact Brooke directly at (917) 575-7370.
Wise Words for Brides and Grooms
Monday, March 30th, 2009Just discovered this article and thought it was very wise…nothing like hearing it from a 25-year veteran!
“I was freaking out. I went to bed the night before, freaking out. What was I doing? What was he doing? We were 26, and we were getting married. It was such a bad idea – clearly we were too young. Everybody knows the true best age for a first marriage is 45…” Read full article here.

5 Tips for Engagement Pictures
Tuesday, December 9th, 2008Who better than a professional photographer to give you tips on how to take amazing engagement pictures? We recently contacted some of NYC’s most sought-after photographers for their tips on what to wear in your engagement pictures, how to choose your location and how to be comfortable during your session.
- Stick to solid colors, no distracting patterns – perhaps a splash of color but not too much as it will be a distraction. (Casey, Fatchett Photography)
- Casual is a plus. Being able to sit or even lie on the ground can add a variety of shots. (Spencer Lum, 5 West Studios)
- Think classic. You want pictures that you can hang in your home for years to come. (Michael, Michael Meyer Photo)
- Even if you want heels for your pictures, bring a pair of flats for walking in between locations. (Mariann, Blue Daisy Weddings)
- Don’t focus too much on your location, some of the best photos I’ve done were taken in a parking lot! (Sophia Jasnowski, Fotofia)
The last piece of advice comes from Sophia of Fotofia… “What matters in the shot is YOU, the couple, in love with each other.” Check back on Thursday for some of the photographers’ all-time favorite engagement shots!
