Calling All Aspiring Wedding Planners!
Starting a career in wedding planning can be intimidating, especially when you don’t know where to begin. Employers in the wedding planning industry typically look for individuals with three to five years of experience. But where does one find this type of experience? Luckily, our team at Brilliant Event Planning has been in your shoes and has some advice!
Unlike other occupations, there is not one clear path toward becoming a wedding planner. In fact, most of the time, it is anything but a linear process. While you do not technically need a certification or degree to become a planner, getting experience within the industry is essential. Yes, we all can agree that being organized, creative, and attentive to detail makes you a great candidate, but the true test comes when you experience your first wedding.
In order to gain this type of experience, there are several different options that individuals can pursue, keeping in mind that there is not one that is better than the others.
Initially, people will often start as a day-of-assistant. The role of a day-of assistant is to support the head planner and ensure that the day runs as smoothly as possible. This could entail things such as setting up escort card displays, supervising transportation, or welcoming guests as they arrive. For those who are just starting out in the field, this is a great introduction into the world of wedding planning and all of the many components within it. For college students, or those who are not looking for a full-time commitment, this is a great option because it allows you to dip your toes in the water while still maintaining your busy schedule.
For those who are looking for a more intensive learning experience, we highly recommend internships. Fun fact - all of our team members at Brilliant Event Planning began as interns, so we can definitely attest to their benefit! When applying to internships, it is important to consider what market you envision yourself in. Internships can be an important networking opportunity. Do your research and reach out to companies that align with your future goals. Internships allow you to get a better sense of what a full-time job in the industry looks like, while still under the close supervision of a planner. Responsibilities of an intern may include tasks such as researching and connecting with vendors, maintaining small business items, and collaborating with team members to ensure a successful event. It is important to remember that internships are what you make of them; the more effort you put in, the more you will get out of it. Your hard work will not go unnoticed.
Want to be a part of our Brilliant team? We are always looking for cheery future event creators to join our internship program in both New York City and Boston. Please email chelsea@brillianteventplanning.com with your cover letter and resume to apply.
If neither of those options sound like the right fit for you, do not worry! There are so many exciting ways to get involved with the wedding industry. Just because you are interested in becoming a wedding planner, does not mean that you are restricted solely to planning. In fact, oftentimes employers appreciate having individuals with experience in other areas of the industry. Maybe you begin working as a florist, or a photographer’s assistant. You could be on a catering team, or work at a venue. These experiences will provide you with a unique perspective and insight that other potential candidates may not have. Use that to your advantage!
